A personal project retelling Homer's Odyssey as a fantasy/sci-fi western. Red Sun follows Gabriel, a cyborg gunslinger, as he travels the American West on a journey to find his home and memories while being pursued by bounty hunters, gang members, and a doomsday cult. Developed as a pitch for an animated show.

Completed in 2023.

Character Thumbnails

Character-specific props were intended to show personality, and the natural wear and tear from living on the road. I especially focused on the shape language and function of each weapon, and what it says about the person using it.

Cowboys have to have pistols, or course. The cultists do too- they just also use sickles because it's scarier. They care about their aesthetic.

Color Script + Style Frames

The color script emphasizes the contrast between warm and cool colors throughout the film, red symbolizing danger, magic, and the Cult of the Red Sun, and blue representing the normal world.

The wide open sky is important to the story, representing freedom, and conveying emotional beats.

It follows the basic beats of a quest narrative, and all of the high points of a good western (Train robbery! Gunfight! Singing around a campfire! Riding through wide prairies!)

Two panels of the color script were chosen to turn into style frames.
